John J. Capozzi, 81, of Lakeland, passed away Thursday at Rosewood Heights. He was born and raised in Auburn, graduated from West High School and then served 2 years in the Navy. He then attended the Syracuse University extension program in Utica. John got his pilot's license for small aircraft at the age of 16. Later, he became a Certified Flight Instructor and enjoyed flying and teaching for the rest of his life. He pursued many other interests including: playing drums in the high school band, later playing with other bands in town and he was also a caller for Square Dances. In addition, John was a first generation American and maintained a good knowledge of Italian. He also learned French and spoke it well. His work experience started in the construction trades but he considered himself mainly a building painter, inside and outside. His last job was in the office of General Services at the State Office building, where, later he transferred into the Division for Youth, retiring in 1990.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mildred Amy (Curtiss) Capozzi; 3 brothers, Anthony, Patrick and Nicholas Capozzi; 3 sisters, Mary Osterman, Lucy Ciulla and Angela Bowden; numerous nieces and nephews as well as numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday, August 2, 2008, 11AM at May Memorial Uniterian Universalist Society, 3800 East Genesee St., Dewitt, NY 13214.
