John C. Allen, 72, Bridgeport, NY, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016, in the Hospice Center of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse, after a valiant, five-year battle with cancer, which he fought with strength and determination. John was born in Albany, NY, on September 9, 1944, to Helen M. (Richard) Allen and Clifford McCullough (both deceased). John is survived by a sister, Jeannine (Joan) Hennessy, Northville, Michigan; daughter, Tammy M. Herr (David), Cary, NC; John C. Allen Jr. (Danielle), Charleston, WV, granddaughter Kayleigh, grandson Joseph, his life partner, Linda R. Bennett, Cicero, NY, cherished nephews, relatives, and many loving friends.
John proudly served in the United States Army Airborne (101st) from 1961 to 1964, and his paratrooper days are among the happiest memories of his life. He was employed in the HVAC and Environmental Controls fields for over 40 years, and was owner/operator of an online retail business specializing in the sale of Australian clothing and accessories. John held a U.S. Coast Guard Masters License; he operated a fishing charter service, Raindance Charters, on Lake Ontario for the past 15 years.
John has been described by friends as being "his own man, and a man's man to boot. He always had a boyish humor and devilish silly streak to him."
John's most cherished place to spend time was out on the water, or near the water; boating was his pleasure. Among his other hobbies and interests were building renovation, target shooting, solving brain teaser puzzles, and he always enjoyed a spirited political discussion! He had a love of astronomy and enjoyed reading about the universe and Einstein's theories.
There will be no calling hours at this time; a celebration of John's life is being planned after the Christmas holidays, at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Syracuse, NY. Donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, are appreciated, as John was a dedicated contributor to St. Jude's for the past several years.
