Joel Simmons, 63, of North Syracuse, New York, died peacefully Thursday night after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Born in Brooklyn, Joel moved to Central New York, graduated from West Hill High School then served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Joel later graduated from OCC with a degree in business. Joel lived his life to the fullest and accomplished his dreams. He married the sunshine of his life, Margo and together they raised three children. He was a successful businessman; having built, owned and operated Sunshine Mini Mart for over 25 years. He loved spending winters with his family in Fort Lauderdale, eating good food, traveling, and horseracing. Anyone that knew Joel will remember him for his unique character, one of a kind sense of humor, and great love for his family. He will be missed and remembered by many.
Joel is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Margo (Jordan) Simmons, daughter Bridgette (Jeffrey) Evans, daughter Courtney (Jason Kwilos) Simmons, son, Joshua Simmons, grandsons, Luke and Jake Evans, sister Nanette (Bob) Manning, Roni (Ray) Overton, brother, Scott (Mary) Simmons, brother, Philip Simmons, uncle, Irwin Berliner, aunt, Marilyn Lieberman, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Pauline Simmons.

Private services will be held at Woodlawn Mausoleum. There will be no calling hours.
