JoAnn (Morris) O'Neil, age 60, of Brewerton, NY passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 6th.
Born September 19, 1955 in Rome, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Grace Morris.
She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1973. In December, 1976, she earned a B.S. in Mathematics, with honors, from SUNY Oneonta.
In October 1999, JoAnn married Thomas O'Neil. Tom and JoAnn have lived happily in Brewerton since their marriage.
JoAnn retired from Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square in 2012, after 34 years of dedicated service as a math teacher. During this time JoAnn coached the math team, coached girls' basketball, and was a soccer referee.
JoAnn had many interests and hobbies. She loved physical activity including walking, running, hiking, yoga, and golfing. In 1990 she successfully completed the Toshiba National Marathon in Ottawa, Canada. In 2005, she got a hole-in-one on the fourth hole at the Greenview Country Club in Central Square, NY.
JoAnn enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, quilting, gardening, and baking. JoAnn is famous for her incredible chocolate chip cookies which she baked for all of her family and friends. JoAnn shared many wonderful vacations with her husband Tom, visiting the National Parks. JoAnn also loved reading books, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends, especially spending Holidays at her cousins, the Barry Family of Rome, NY.
JoAnn is survived by her devoted husband Thomas O'Neil, two children, Patrick (Jennifer) O'Neil, and Meghan O'Neil, a grandchild, James Patrick O'Neil, a brother, Peter (Laura) Morris, a sister, Donna Morris, an Aunt, Ann Heisler, a nephew, Jeffrey (Alana) Morris, a niece, Anna Morris, and cousins and in-laws.
JoAnn was predeceased by a brother, Edward Morris.
Calling hours will be from 3-6PM on Friday, August 12th at the Newcomer Funeral Home at 705 N. Main St. in Syracuse, NY, followed by a Memorial Service.
JoAnn's family suggests that donations, in her memory, be made to Hospice of Central NY, (www.hospicecny.org) or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, or to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
