Jennette Virginia Kingsberry was born September 28, 1923 in Warrenton, NC to William Arthur and Melinda Kingsberry and departed this life March 13, 2017 in Syracuse NY.
Preceding her in death were her siblings, Thelma Gettins, Arthur Kingsberry, Bettye Staten, Helen Hargrove and Emma Hargrove and special nephew, William A. Kingsberry.
She is the eldest of 11 children. Known to all family and friends as Virginia or Sister. Virginia accepted the Lord as her Savior at early age and became a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church in Warrenton, North Carolina.
She left North Carolina at the age of 17 to relocate to New York City where she worked as a domestic and sang with the Utility Gospel Singer Group. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, New York, NY. The Lord spoke to her to travel and sing full time with the Utility Gospel Singer Group.
After several years, she stopped singing and used her skill as a seamstress and she volunteered at the Sydenham Hospital in Harlem NY, where she became interested in nursing. She worked as a nurse's aide at St. Francis Hospital, NY until they closed. She then worked for 18 years at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY where she was so good at her job that they sent her to school for nursing. She loved children and had a special gift to work 'miracles' with them. Once they saw she was able to comfort a child that no one else could they transferred her from working with adults to children. She relocated in 2006 from Bronx, NY to Syracuse, NY where she spent her later years. She was a member of First Christian Assembly Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Gladys White; son in law, Thomas White; 2 grandchildren, Cynthia Purry, in law Marvin Purry, Lisa White; 2 great grandchildren, Mackenzie Purry and Chandler Purry; siblings, Linda Jennings, Dorothy Boyd, Ethel Crume, Grace Hargrove. and Charles Hargrove and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 18th 10-10:30AM at First Christian Assembly, 705 Hamilton Street, Syracuse with a funeral service to follow at 10:30AM. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
