Jay A. Seitz, 77, of Cicero, passed away peacefully at home from a long battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side on March 3, 2018.
Jay was born in Syracuse, NY on March 22, 1940 to the late Jay and Mary Seitz.
Jay retired from Syracuse Fire Department after 33 years of faithful service as Lieutenant of Fire Prevention. His second career was as Town of Cicero Code Enforcement Director of Planning.
He started his career working at the family business, Seitz Oil Products of Syracuse, NY. Due to this, he was an avid collector of oil memorabilia, classic cars and "junk".
Jay was the co-founder and developer of the Fire Prevention Education Center of the NYS Fairgrounds as well as Hector the Smoke Detector. He also was the Fire Marshal for the NYS Fair & the Carousel Center for many years. He also was a Sportsman Education Hunter Safety Master Instructor for 50 years.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the American Truck Historical Society, the HH Franklin Car Club, the Syracuse Ford Mustang Club, the South Shore Rod & Gun Club.
He is predeceased by his two brothers, Donald Seitz and Herbert Seitz.
He is survived by his Wife of 46 years, Virginia Seitz, Daughter, Jenn (Joe) Starkey; Two Sons, Jay (Sara) Seitz Jr. and John Seitz; Sister, Mary Jane Boring; Three Grandchildren, Jacob Seitz, Noah Seitz and Jovani Starkey; sister in law, Dorothy Seitz as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place Sunday, 12-3 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, N. Syracuse. A memorial service will follow at 3 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Local Union 280 or the Syracuse City Fire Department Cancer fund.
