James C. "Thunder" Thornton (76) of Liverpool passed unexpectedly, on a bad day for him. He was born in Syracuse, NY and lived most of his life in North Syracuse. He is survived by his wife Susan, one stepdaughter Kristy (Mark) Kavney of Fairmount, and one stepson Shann (Giovanna) Smith of Dallas, TX.
Jim graduated from North Syracuse High School and then entered the U.S. Marines in 1964 and served until 1968. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. Jim was employed by the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office in the Police Department for 21 years and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. He received numerous commendations and awards including the Medal of Valor and the National Exchange Club Service Award. He was a charter life member and past Senior Vice Commander of North Syracuse VFW Post 7290. Jim was also a member of the Cicero American Legion Post 787, a member of Central New York Chapter 103 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was also a charter member of North Syracuse Pup Tent 32 of the Military Order of the Cootie and a charter life member and past Commander of North Syracuse AMVETS Post 729. Jim was a Gold Star Brother of his younger brother, Lance Corporal Curtis F. Thornton who was killed in action in Vietnam in January of 1969.
Later in his life Jim enjoyed many hobbies including target shooting at South Shore Rod and Gun Club, boating and spending time at camp (Blew Heaven, Chaumont Bay) with his wife and friends Melanie and Randy Edgar. In leu of flowers, please send donations to Clear Path for Veterans.
Calling hours will be held on Monday June 27th from 4-6pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 705 N. Main St., North Syracuse. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday June 28th 10am at North Syracuse Cemetery with military honors.
