James L. Cummings, 68, passed on May 19th, 2020. Born in Williamsport, PA, he spent the last 50 years in the Syracuse area.
Jim is survived by his fiancé and the love of his life, Karen Carpenter; and her two children, Sean (Elise) Donovan, Erin (Tim) Doolittle; and one granddaughter, Baby Girl Donovan, due this month. He is also survived by a sister, CarolLynd (James) Campbell and three nieces, Melissa, Aimee and Erinn.
Jim was predeceased by his father, Wilmer, his mother, Florence, and a brother, Michael.
Jim served 25 years with the Syracuse Fire Department retiring in 1998. In 1978 he received the City's highest award for heroism, "The Francis Hendricks Medal". He was appointed Chief of Fire by Mayor Roy Bernardi in 1995. Among numerous awards as Chief, he was most proud of garnering for the first time the "ISO One Classification" for the City of Syracuse. After retirement Jim spent most of his time with family and doing woodworking projects. He especially enjoyed learning the art of making maple syrup using sap from his property in the Adirondacks. His dedication to his three rescue dogs he adopted in later life not only gave him, but his family, the utmost satisfaction and enjoyment.
Funeral services and burial will be private. There will be no calling hours.
