Herbert "Herb" T. Smith Jr., 64, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital from complications of heart surgery. Herb died as he lived, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, Harriet and Herbert T. Smith Sr., his brother and sister-in-law David and Lorri Smith, and his father-in-law Francis R. Paden.
Herb was a 1967 graduate of Henninger High School and a 1971 graduate of Clarkson College. He had been employed by Crouse-Hinds Traffic Division, Lamson Corporation, and retired from NE Controls, a company he co-founded and co-owned.
His favorite past-times were playing guitar, listening to music, woodworking and gardening. But his best times were spent with his two sons. Andy and Dave were his life and he was so proud of both of them. They made him a very happy father and his spirit will be with them always.
Herb fought non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for 20 years, having had 2 stem cell transplants. The second transplant was one in which Herb received his brother's stem cells. He was always so thankful to his brother Chris for giving him a second chance at life, and to his sister Pam for always being there for him.
Herb is survived by his loving wife of almost 40 years Sally Paden Smith, sons Andrew Smith, Greensboro, NC and David Smith (Daena Hurley), Liverpool, NY, sister, Pamela (Joseph) Piraino, Clay, NY, brother Christopher (Laura) Smith of Boulder, CO and his Foster-Pup. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Jean Paden, North Syracuse, brother-in-law Richard (Patricia) Paden, Johnson City, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held 4-7PM Monday at New Comer Funeral Home, N. Syracuse. Funeral Service will be 11AM on Tuesday, also at the funeral home. Interment North Syracuse Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Gullo, Hematology-Oncology of CNY, Dr. Gordon Phillips, University of Rochester Cancer Center, and the nurses of St. Joseph's SICU… you all worked so hard to "heal" Herb and we will always be grateful to you. You were more than doctors and nurses, you became our family and friends. Thank you.
