Herbert "Homer" George Ryan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at The Grand Nursing Home in Chittenango, NY. Homer was born on February 22, 1941 and graduated from Massena High School. He worked locally in the maintenance department for many north county restaurants and bars before relocating to Syracuse.
In Syracuse, Homer worked at The Century Club for 27 years before his retirement in 2008. Homer resided within the Club during his tenure and took solace knowing the historic building was never left unattended. Homer also took pride in his work and was a true friend to his co-workers, always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Homer will always be part of the Century Club's folklore. He is the only employee to be included in a watercolor painting of the building by local artist Betty Munro. The painting was gifted to the Club by the Honorable Judge Thomas Higgins and Mr. George Raus. Homer can be seen peering out of the front window as he often did and was ultimately captured in the painting.
Homer loved the north country and Central New York. He was an avid fair goer especially enjoying the barns filled with farm animals and watching the youngsters competing for ribbons. He had a love for country music and had an extensive collection of cowboys hats.
Homer was thrilled to rent a home in Lyncourt after his retirement and would spend his time working around "his" house and yard making a beautiful home for himself. In true Homer style he became a lovable character in the neighborhood. This was all made possible by his friend, Jason Widger. Homer and Jason were great friends and Jason later became Homer's care giver for many years.
Homer is at peace now after several years of failing health. He has left his friends with wonderful memories of his simple kind gestures and will they will smile when the words "Tater Tots" are mentioned.
