Herbert Otto Schulze

On March 7, 2013, Lt. Col. Herbert Otto Schulze, USAF-Retired, went to his eternal rest attended by his immediate family.
The oldest of five children of Max and Bertha, Schulze Otto resided on the North Side of Syracuse until he entered the military service in 1939 as a flying cadet and was subsequently appointed as 2nd Lt. in the Army-Air Corps.
Throughout his 22 years of military service he served in many various assignments in the US, England Germany and Japan. During WWII as a squadron commander in a B-17 bomber group, he was cited for outstanding leadership in 29 combat missions, promoted to Lt. Colonel and Deputy Group Commander, and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.
After graduating from the Air University Command and Staff School in 1948, he was assigned as Inspector General of the Berlin Airlift at Rhein-Main Air Force Base until its mission was successfully accomplished. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1961, Otto graduated from Syracuse University and entered the teaching profession. He taught German and American History in North Syracuse until his retirement in 1979.
Otto was a charter member of the Onondaga Symphony Orchestra in which he played in the 1st violin section until his retirement in 1997. Also in 1962 Otto became a charter member and local leader of the New York Conservative Party, where has remained active in various leadership positions for five decades! He was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
He was predeceased by his formers wives Willie Mae Fayard of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, the mother of his three children, and Sigrid Essig of Kassel, Germany. Also his son, Bernard Otto Schulze.
He is survived by his daughters Karin Schulze and Patricia Zangari, nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The spiritual love and bond with his family and friends was the joy and motivation force of his life. "We must preserve our country, our God-inspired constitution for our children and grand-children" was his unceasing admonition to any and all would listen. He will always live in our hearts!
Calling hours on Monday from 4-7pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., N. Syracuse. Burial will take place at 11am at Woodlawn Cemetery on Tuesday.
