Helen M. Russell

Helen M. Russell, of North Syracuse, died Tuesday.
Born in Malone on February 10, 1918, she was the daughter of Charles L. and Donalda (Shattuck) Turner.
She attended Burke Union Free School and graduated from Chateaugay High School, Plattsburgh Normal School and earned a BS degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam.
In 1940, she married Earl H. Maher and later became a partner in his family business, The Malone Milling Company. Mr. Maher died in 1956.
In 1960, she married Malone Telegram Editor Ray Russell. They lived in Malone until 1999 when they moved to Baldwinsville, NY. Mr. Russell died in 2004.
She was also predeceased by a brother, Fred V. Turner in 1985 and a stepson, Peter Russell in 2013.
Mrs. Russell was employed by the Franklin County Social Services Dept. for 20 years, retiring in 1983 as Staff Development Co-ordinator. She was a member of the Centenary Methodist Church in Malone and sang in its church choir for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Elm City Chapter OES.
She is survived by a son, Earl (Carol) Dennis Maher of Mattydale, NY and a daughter Donna (Don) Kennedy of North Syracuse; one stepson, Bill (Anne) Russell of Memphis, TN; four granddaughters, Janice (Aaron) King, Jenny Maher, Jill (Antonio) Alaya and Katharine Kennedy, one grandson; Steven D. LaClair (Kim) ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be 12pm Monday at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, N. Syracuse. Burial at North Syracuse Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church in Syracuse and the Alice Ballard Hospice Fund or the Centenary Methodist Church, Malone, NY.
