Helen J. Gitchell, 85, of Cicero, passed away on Wednesday at home. She was born on February 20, 1926 in Dupont, PA, daughter of John and Mary Berlinski. In 1952 she was married to Lawrence Dale Gitchell, Jr. He passed away in 1985. Helen was a teacher for many years with Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools where she taught in Guam, Maine, Japan, Okinawa and Germany. She was a member of the International & American Volkssport Assoc., she enjoyed traveling, square dancing and after retirement, doing taxes at H & R Block.
She is survived by 2 sons; Michael (Sara Frank) Gitchell, Jack (Corina Banks) Gitchell, 2 daughters; Patricia Verrette, Amy (Mohammad Mafi) Gitchell, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brother, Nicholas Berlinski, 3 sisters; Anne Hostak, Dorothy Hernandez and Irene Cituk. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Robert Verrette.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday 2pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., N. Syracuse.
