Helen Bell Cressey Ashley

Helen Bell Cressey Ashley passed away peacefully at home in Syracuse, NY on Tuesday January
17th, three days after her 85th birthday with 19 of her friends and family.

She had been ill for several years and was cared for at home.

She was born and raised in Mamont; PA graduated from Wilson College and received a graduate degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve.

She came to Syracuse as a nurse in 1960 and worked in a number of positions. Helen was the first to teach birth control in Onondaga County at Planned Parenthood. She went on to become one of the first women to earn a nurse practitioner certificate and completed her career in the women's health department of Onondaga County. She was a member of May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society and served as vice president.

Her first husband, Richard C. Cressey, passed away in 1989.

She and David C. Ashley married in 1992. She was known for her sunny disposition and helping other people.

Her survivors are a son, John George Cressey of Scottsdale, AZ, daughters Suzanne Bell Osborn of Loveland, Ohio and her husband Jon Osborn and their children, Andrew Osborn and Elizabeth Bell Osborn as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee St. Syracuse, NY on Saturday, February 4th at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Helen Bell Cressey Ashley, '54, Scholarship Fund at Wilson College, 1015 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
