Gregory Stewart McLachlan
June 24, 1961 – October 11, 2024
(Dexter, New York)
Gregory Stewart McLachlan was born in Queens, New York, on June 24, 1961. He was born to Barbara Ann (Boyle) and Gordon Bruce McLachlan. He was a first-generation American, descending from Archibald William McLachlan, born in Rothsay, Isle of Bute, Scotland, in 1841.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Sandra, stepdaughter Tanya Laquerre-Dubord (Sebastien), granddaughter Penelope, stepson Jason Muir, brothers Kevin (Lauren) and Scott, a nephew, and many cousins in the USA and Canada.
Greg's dad had a career in the Navy as an enlisted serviceman, so the family moved a lot. As he was growing up, they lived in California, Florida, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Michigan. When the family moved to San Diego in 1970, Greg joined the Cub Scouts. When he turned 11, he transitioned to Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle in 1979.
In June 1979, Greg graduated from Kearny High School and attended Mesa Community College. Before he completed his first semester of classes, he enlisted in the US Air Force and became a Computer Programmer. Over the next four years, he was stationed at Air Force bases in Idaho, Louisiana, and Southern California.
Following his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1983, Greg continued as a computer programmer in the private sector and later became a long-haul trucker. While driving big rigs, he met the love of his life, Sandra Muir. They were married on August 4, 2003, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They loved having the opportunity to visit many different parts of the country. Greg returned to school and earned an AA Degree in Computer Programming, emphasizing Website Design.
In the 1980s, Greg heard about the Scottish Highland Games being held in San Diego. He invited his Dad to attend the event, and they joined the Clan MacLachlan Association of North America. Greg volunteered at the clan tent, became the Equipment Director, and served Clan MacLachlan in other ways for several years.
Greg was very interested in Genealogy. He brought a computer to the Scottish games to assist people in learning more about their family history. He maintained a database for his family, researching the many branches on Rootsweb, Ancestry, Wiki Tree, and the LDS Family Search websites. He also connected with extended cousins and kept in touch on Facebook.
In June 2024, Greg had a quadruple bypass. As he was recovering from the surgery, he suffered a stroke, which paralyzed his left side. He was eventually able to wiggle his left toes and left fingers, but he was essentially bedbound and was moved into a long-term care facility. While there, he caught pneumonia. He passed away in his sleep on October 11, 2024.
Greg is predeceased by his mother, father, and infant brother, Geoffrey.
