Gordon Scofield

At the first light of dawn, on Friday, March 26th, Gordon's spirit left this earth, accompanied by a glorious chorus of singing birds saluting a new day. He would have liked that. He was a man of many interests and skills, always looking forward to whatever was next and what he could learn from it. He shared the burden of Vietnam with many friends and was a compassionate listener and counselor, hoping to help anyone who was going through a difficult time.

He loved being outdoors, even on his last day on Earth. He enjoyed fishing and boating, gardening, photography, flying model airplanes and all creatures, great and small. In 2012, he acquired his beloved service dog, Major - a golden retriever with a heart of gold. They were inseparable. His life encompassed military service, many and varied occupations and in the middle of his life, he achieved a long desired Bachelor's Degree from Columbia College with 3 areas of concentration. During this time, he and Louise found each other and had 34 cherished years together, not without some ups and downs. They owned and operated a pet food store, Tweeter Feeders, for 20 years, and closed at the end of 2018 when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.

He leaves behind a scattered family, a son, Ed and daughter, Mary Helen, each with their respective families; a brother in Colorado and brother in South Dakota, his wife Louise, and her children Christine Engel, David Schonborg, Stephanie Naughton and their respective families; and Major. He was a member of the Liverpool F.D., past member of the Mexico F.D and had been involved with the Masonic in Mexico.

His last regret was knowing that he would not be able to take one last vacation/fishing trip to Canada. He has moved on to another adventure, where "he will not be imprisoned by death, but diffused in Nature, in the soil, the air, the sunshine and in the hearts of those who loved him". Remember him, not with flowers, but by showing kindness and tolerance for others. Learn from your mistakes.

A celebration of his life will be held April 10th at Liverpool Fire Department #1 from 11:00am until 2:00pm.
