Geraldine F. Sweeney "Gerry"
January 15, 2013
Geraldine F. Sweeney, "Gerry" 65, of Jordan, died peacefully Tuesday at Auburn Memorial Hospital, with her sister-in-law "Aunt" by her side.
Gerry was the youngest child born on August 29, 1947 in Syracuse to Earl & Dorothy Sweeney. In her early years, Gerry lived with her parents in Lysander & Baldwinsville, where she enjoyed sitting outside,
taking walks, feeding the ducks, and re-assuring her dog, Tanner, that the train "won't get her".
She was very crafty, always making potholders and popsicle stick jewelry boxes for family and friends.
You would find her at the picnic table with her CD's listening to Country Music, Kenny Rogers, and her "love"........ Elvis....
When family and friends dropped by she got the coffee on and the sweets...A friendly, loving individual..
She always gave her nieces and nephews valuable time, spending time with them outside while they played, coloring with them or taking them for a walk.........
After the death of her parents, she moved to Auburn, Baldwinsville and then to Jordan, where she wanted to be independent. Her brother, and his wife decided to fulfill her "want" and built her, "own
apartment", adjoining to their home...
Gerry enjoyed traveling to Disney World, riding on Dumbo, going into the Haunted House and seeing Mickey Mouse, and visiting friends who took her and her family for a boat ride through the Canals, where she saw alligators and many
different birds. She even was brave enough to eat alligator at a local restrauant. Even though she didn't like the water, she braved a ride on Uncle Sam's boat tours in the Thousand Islands and visited Boldt Castle with her niece and her family.
Gerry was involved in ARC of Onondaga County Day Habilitation since 2001, where she had many friends.. She was given the opportunity to go to the Burnet Park Zoo, Farmers Market and many outings that helped her to be independent.
The family would like to thank the staff, especially Annette, at ARC for taking an interest in the "fiesty" Geraldine.
She went to the Spaulding Crystal House for weekend get-a-ways. Attending the Friday Night Dance at the Fairgrounds, going to the movies, or just "hanging" around the house with the girls......
Gerry began to work at the WIlbur Work Center in 2004, assembly line, retiring in 2011. She made a lot of friends, and valued her job to make money to spend for the Friday Night Dance......
Gerry participated in New Visions Summer College at OCC summer of 2008 & 2009. She enjoyed getting
her nails painted and going to summer college.
Gerry loved meeting new people, she would stick out her hand and say, "Hello, my name is Geraldine".
She loved visiting with her neighbors and telling them stories. One in particular, Tammy. would come to visit and they would drink tea and she would always remind Gerry about not eating sugar, eating healthy and walking.
Gerry had many, many friends, that she didn't know who cared for her, and loved her because she was a loving, generous lady.
As her nieces and nephews had their own child and she became a Great Aunt her desire to spend time with her great nieces and great nephews. She was her Great Nephew's test subject for a photo project. She posed for a glamour
shot.
Corinne, we thank you for giving us the support to help Gerry to here, in her apartment, to be independent, and be near her family......You have been to her "I'll tell Corinne".... You have helped and changed our sister, aunt, and the great aunt, to have her wish, to be independent and have her own apartment..
We couldn't have done it without you, Corinne.......You are one of a million......
The family would also like to express their deepest thank you for the compassionate care she received at Auburn Memorial Hospital, from the E/R Staff to the ICC Unit 3rd floor, especially Chasity, who gave the family comfort, at the time of need, she is a genuine, caring Nurse. And Dr. Karin Kroeger M.D, who kept encouraging Gerry to keep on a good diet and eat healthy, and you won't need to take insulin anymore......Yes, Gerry lost over 50 lbs., thanks
