Memorial services for Gerald E. Sanford, age 87, of North Syracuse, and native of Potsdam, will be held Sunday, November 2, at 3 PM at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam. The Rev. James Barnes of Potsdam United Methodist Church will officiate. Calling hours for friends and family are Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. An Urn Burial will be in the Mound Hill Cemetery in Nicholville at a later date.

Gerald died October 19, 2008 at the Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, NY where he had been a resident for a short time.

Survivors include his wife Annabelle of North Syracuse, two sons, Tom of Ballston Spa and Eric of New York City; two daughters, Caron Koll of Marcellus, NY, and Linda Sanford of Columbia, CT; seven grandchildren Janine, Judson, Cailin, Stephanie, Jessie, Carly and Sarah. Also surviving are a nephew, Rev. Paul Sanford of Chestertown, NY; niece, Susan Sanford of Tupper Lake, sister-in-law, Elois Sanford of Tupper Lake, and great nephews Craig and Donald Sanford.

Gerald's four brothers, Chester, Paul, Lawrence, and Judson predeceased him.

Gerald was born in Parishville, NY, December 27, 1920, the son of Fred and Pearl (Cheney) Sanford. He served as a fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Army Air Corps (347th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group) during WWII. He graduated from Clarkson College in 1950, with a Mechanical Engineering degree. As an athlete, Gerald participated in track and footfall in high school. He loved downhill skiing, golf, tennis, many outdoor sports throughout his life. When he started snow skiing, the gear consisted of wood barrel planks strapped to his boots. After graduation from Clarkson, his first career interest was in building houses. He constructed two homes in the Potsdam area. In 1951, Gerald expanded his construction interests by joining Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation as a civil engineer. He served as System Project Manager in various locations across New York State, for 30 years. While in Potsdam, he collaborated with other engineers in the construction of the hydropower facilities on the Raquette and Beaver River systems. While in Buffalo he supervised plant improvements at the Dunkirk power plant. His last project with Niagara Mohawk Power was at Nine-Mile Point Nuclear Power Station where he held the position of Construction Supervisor and Field Coordinating Engineer. On retiring in 1980, Gerald stayed active. He worked on antique cars as a hobby and continued to fly single engine planes (Cloud Nine Flying Club). He also continued skiing golfing and playing tennis.
