George James known to many as "Poppy" was adored by all who knew him. He had an infectious smile and quiet demeanor but when he spoke, it was with wisdom that commanded attention. Poppy retired as a meat cutter from Price Chopper in 2011 and enjoyed spending his retirement showcasing his culinary skills. He was always on the go with his wife, Doby, whom he referred to as "Hun." They made the most of their retirement by serving others, volunteering in the kitchen at Living Word Church for weddings, painting rooms at Living Word Academy and spending time with their family and friends.
Poppy was a man of faith who lived his life to please the Lord, his Savior. When he was given the diagnosis of lung cancer with brain metastases, he was strong, and not once did he beg the question, "why me?" Instead, he diligently sought the Lord and God poured out His grace upon Poppy, giving him a peace that surpassed all understanding. Poppy maintained right up until the end, "it is well with my soul." He led by example and lived by the faith he so passionately told others about. Poppy finished his race with integrity and courage and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Doretha, daughters; Robin (Randy) Delaney, Melba James, grandchildren, Ashleigh, Evan, Jaxson, brothers, Daniel James, Jr., William (Agnes) James, David James, Jimmie Lee James, John Thomas James, Terrance James and sister Gloria Williams. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel, Sr. & Annie Mae James, his brother, Charles James and sister, Betty James.
A special thank you to the staff on D5 at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Emergency Room for the compassionate, above and beyond care they gave to my Poppy.
