Gary E. Cavanaugh

August 7, 1955 — February 22, 2020

Gary E. Cavanaugh, 64, of Syracuse, passed away February 22, 2020.

Gary was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1955 to the late William and Mabel Cavanaugh. Gary spent his childhood growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his 9 brothers and sisters. After graduating from Oliver High School, he dedicated his life to the US Army. During his 22 years of military service, Gary was awarded for his leadership, dedication, bravery and above all his desire to teach and help others. After 22 years of service, he retired to spend the rest of his life devoted to his children Sara and Shawn. You could always find him front and center at a sports game, a high school performance or a competition cheering on not only his children but the friends and classmates that made up their tiny community and sports teams! It was never a surprise that anyone and everyone who knew Gary, loved Gary. His devotion to those around him was contagious and the love he had for giving never went unnoticed. A brief chat in the grocery store or during his favorite weekend activity of going to garage sales, he was sure to make a friend and learn something new about anyone he encountered. Without a doubt, he left his own stamp on the world and with those who were lucky enough to have met him. When his grandsons were born, he was given a new meaning in life and he cherished every moment with his grandsons. He wore the title of "Papa" like a badge of honor and there is no question that his greatest accomplishment as a father was to see his children become parents themselves. The world will be a very different place with the absence of Gary. To carry on his memory, we ask that you help a neighbor, a stranger, a family member or friend. Take time to absorb the company of those around you. Don't be afraid to make the first joke or to break the silence in a room. Gary's legacy will forever live in the laughter of those who share his memory.

He is survived by his son, Shawn (Hannah) Cavanaugh; daughter, Sara (Michael Scott) Cavanaugh; former spouse, Kimberly Cavanaugh; grandsons, Nathan Rice, Easton Scott, Caleb Cavanaugh, and Landon Cavanaugh.

He was predeceased by brothers, Danny and Ricky; and sister, Louise.
