Frederick K. Owen, Jr., 85, formerly of "The Valley" and North Syracuse went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, surrounded by his loving family. He came to know his Lord and Savior over 35 years ago and read through the Bible 4 times each year. Born in Syracuse the son of the late Nellie McVinney and Frederick K. Owen and step father Phillip Bennett, he was a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area. Fred was a 35 year member of the Buckley Road Baptist Church. Fred retired from Niagara Mohawk in 1986. He served in the US Army and received the National Defense Service Medal. Fred coached baseball with his sons teams for many years at Valley Little League. He was an avid bowler, sporting an average of 200 plus and table tennis champion during his Army years. Fred was a devoted husband and lovingly took care of his wife Nada who suffered with Alzheimer's until her passing in 2011. He loved his children and adored his grandchildren, as he had a great pride in watching them grow up. His last few years, he resided at Westside Manor in Liverpool where he enjoyed the many activities and outings and we called him the "Mayor" during his stay there. He also served as the Resident President at Westside Manor. We extend a sincere thanks to the staff at Westside Manor for their care and dedication in caring for our Dad like family for the 4 years he lived there. He was predeceased by his wife Nadazhda "Nada" in 2011.
Surviving are 2 sons; Frederick K. Owen, III (Cathy), Syracuse, Rev. Philip W. Owen (Tonia), Buffalo, 2 daughters; Deborah Adragna, Liverpool, Nancy (Doug) Wicks, North Syracuse, 2 sisters-in-law, Nora Bartman, FL, Emogene Georgevich, E. Syracuse, 12 grandchildren; Andrea Adragna, Joseph (Melissa) Adragna, Doug (Karen) Wicks, Christine Dano, Lyndsey (Rob) Nicholson, Lauren (Greg) Usherwood, Garrett (Blandine), Jordan Owen, Jessica (Drew) Payne, Alyssa (Brett) Moody, Benjamin and Jared (Trinity) Owen, 7 great grandchildren; Douglas & Kyle Wicks, Brooke Nadazhda & Owen Nicholson, Jameson Usherwood, Logan Payne & Judah Owen, 2 uncles Merrick (Dorothy) and Elmer Owen, both of FL, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be private and there are no calling hours. A memorial service celebrating Fred's life will be held at Buckley Road Baptist Church on July 17, 2015 at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the American Red Cross of Syracuse.
