Frank G. Spann, 96, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022 in his home of 66 years at 127 Dormar Drive, North Syracuse, New York attended by Daniel Spann, as his caregiver.
Frank was born in Amarillo, TX the son of the late Frank G. Spann, Sr. and Agnes S. Long and the brother of the late William Chism Spann. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1950 as an electrical engineer and was hired by General Electric to work in their research labs in Schenectady, NY. He moved his young family to North Syracuse, NY in 1956 to work as an electrical engineer developing and managing sonar systems utilized by navies of the Free World for underwater mine detection and elimination. Frank retired from GE after 39 years and was hired back as a consultant thereafter.
Frank was an avid outdoorsman, learning to ski in 1946 as one of the first students at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Colorado. His passion for skiing was instilled in his five children, several of which went on to become exceptional ski racers. His active involvement in junior ski racing in New York State led to the honor of his name being attached to the Empire State Junior Ski Racing Championship Trophy. Frank was also a FIS Technical Delegate (Alp.429) for 15 years and officiated at world class alpine ski racing events, including the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980 and several World Cup ski racing events in Colorado. Frank was a member of the National Ski Patrol for close to 50 years and served as the Ski Patrol Leader at Labrador Mountain, NY for many decades. He loved the mountains and all that nature had to offer. Frank enjoyed traveling with the family, often to go skiing and hiking in the Adirondacks, Vermont and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He was a proud member of the "90+" skier club and did double diamond ski slopes with his great-grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, E. Dawn (Boyd) Spann. He is survived by sons, James W. (Gail), Daniel W., Frank J. and Joseph R. (Suzanne) and by daughter, Sherry L. Spann Allen (Peter); grandchildren, James C. (Cynthia), Thomas F. (Melissa), William D. (Rebecca), Amelia D. (Michael), F. Alexander, Katherine E., Nicolle S.
