Floyd Reed Jr. was born in Conway, AR to the late
Floyd Reed Sr. and Bernice Reed on September 18, 1931.
Floyd is the eldest child of seven. He was no stranger to hard labor from his youth while working on the family farm. His family was the last generation of sharecroppers. He worked as a "grease monkey" changing oil on heavy machinery and later learned how to operate the same machinery. He also worked on the railways for a number of years. He later migrated north to Syracuse, NY which he was told, "money grew on trees" (work was plentiful) in the early 1950's. While renovating his family's rental property in walks the love his life, Elsie Gatling.
The two joined as husband and wife on May 11, 1960. The union brought three handsome sons: Timothy, Garrett, and Michael. Floyd and Elsie further extended their love with the addition of twin boys NaKym and Nasir to add to their clan. The family tree grew with the addition of their three grandchildren and three great-grands.
Floyd worked at General Electric Company for 19 years. He later became a truck driver and retired from
Matlow Trucking Company.
He was an outdoorsman who liked fishing, camping, cookouts, and lawn care. Floyd enjoyed spending time with loved ones and friends
and listening to his music.
Floyd was preceded in death by his father and mother, Floyd Reed Sr. and Bernice Reed; his brothers, Billy C. Thomas and Israel Reed; his sisters, Mary Acklin and Minnie Beagle.
Floyd's legacy leaves behind his loving wife, Elsie; his sons, Timothy (Patricia), Garrett, Michael, NaKym (Akari) and Nasir Reed; his sister, Mordell Outley, and his grandchildren, Tinisha (Kelsey) McKay, Makai and Miguel Reed; great grandchildren, Laila, Lael, and Lisa McKay; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
