Father Leo Heizman
September 21, 2004 Father Leo Heizman, 61, of Syracuse, died Tuesday. Born May 5, 1943 to Bernard and Rose Heizman, he was a graduate of Onondaga Central High School. He entered the Christ the King Seminary in Olean, NY and was ordained on May 17, 1969. Hisfirst assignment was at St. Lucy's in Syracuse. He was the principal of both St. Lucy's and also at Immaculate Conception in Fayetteville. Father Heizman was a faculty member of and eventually became principal of Bishop Grimes High School in East Syracuse and also Bishop Cunningham High School in Oswego, NY. He was Pastor of St. Mary's in Mexico and was also stationed at St. Matthew's in East Syracuse and later a Chaplin at Crouse Hospital. He also was Chaplin to the Dewitt Police Department. Father Heizman was the type of priest that reached out to all, no matter what age group. He was a very giving individual. Survivors: His brother, Deacon Bernard Heizman; five sisters, Sister Nadine Heizman OSF, Catherine (Timothy) Fahey, Bernadette (Keith) Mayotte, Jean Marie Heizman, Therese (Curt) Brown; his Foster Son, John Ott and Several nieces and nephews. Services: Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Matthew's Church, East Syracuse where Father Heizman will lie in state. The Mass of the High Priest will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Thursday. On Friday morning at 11 a.m. a funeral mass will be celebrated for all to attend. The Most Reverend Bishop Costello will officiate. Burial will be in the Priest Burial Ground in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt.
