Erkki (Eric) V. Turkki, 93, of Jamesville, passed away on March 1, 2020.
Eric was born in 1926 in Finnish Karelia and was evacuated with his family in 1939 before the Winter War with Russia. At age 17 he was drafted from school during the Continuation War, which ended in a ceasefire just as he was due to be sent to the frontlines. After the war, he entered the Technical Institute of Tampere, graduating as an engineering technician. He started his career in Helsinki with a major engineering company, Vesi Hydro.
He married Pirkko Lampo in 1957 and together they came to the United States in 1959. He continued his education in the US, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master's of Science from Syracuse University, both in civil engineering.
Eric's major professional interest was prevention of water pollution, which began in Finland and continued in New York State, first at the Department of Health and later in the Department of Environmental Conservation, from which he retired in 1990.
His favorite activities during his retirement were collecting stamps, chopping wood, and tending his flower garden at his summer home in Finland.
Eric is survived by his wife, Pirkko; daughters, Eva (Joseph) Kelly of Katonah, NY, and Lisa Turkki of Syracuse; granddaughters, Annabel and Maeve Kelly. He is also survived by a brother and several nieces and nephews in Finland. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Iroquois Nursing Home for the great care they gave him during his stay.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the family's burial site in Helsinki, Finland.
