Elizabeth (Betsy) Demong, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday at Elderwood in Liverpool after surviving multiple health setbacks.
She was born on October 3, 1926 in Pearl River, NY, the daughter of Adolph and Eda Ann Grimm.
She was always proud to be related to the Grimm Brothers of fairy tale fame. She graduated at age 20 from Syracuse University with a Degree in Business and shortly thereafter married Leonard (Bud) Hanley, whom she met at Syracuse University, and moved to New Hartford, NY. While raising her family, she commuted to Syracuse University during the summer and completed her Masters Degree in English. She taught high school English throughout the Utica Area and evening writing classes at both MVCC and Utica College. Her husband Bud introduced her to the Adirondacks where they spent summers hiking and swimming and winters skiing with their three daughters, all of whom came to love the woods as well. Betsy loved to read, sew, knit and complete the New York Times crossword puzzles each day and did so until recently. Her sewing kept her in demand and she could tailor anything from formal suits to habits for a convent of nearby nuns. Betsy was married to her second husband, Richard Demong in 1972 and they eventually retired to the town of Forestport and converted a hunting camp to a year round residence. Never one to shy away from speaking her mind, she was responsible for finally getting the dirt road they lived off of, paved and maintained by the town. She went to work for the Census Dept. after Richards death in 1984, and worked as a field representative there until her daughters bought her a house in North Syracuse and moved her down in 2002. She continued to read, sew and garden in North Syracuse.
She was predeceased by both husbands and her eldest daughter, Kathy Lawler, who sadly passed away in July 2018. Betsy is survived by her daughters, Chris Hanley, N. Syracuse, Vicki Hanley (Frank), Watertown, her favorite grandson, Jonathan Knaust (Michelle), East Greenbush, NY, and son-in-law, Jim Lawler, Camden.
A very special thank you to Elderwood in Liverpool, especially the 3rd Floor Staff. Thank you also to nurses, Walter & Cathy, and aides, Gail & Meghan for your extraordinary kindness.
In keeping with her wishes, services will be private.
Betsy always believed education was the key to success in life, and requested that memorial contributions be sent to Christian Brothers Academy Scholarship Fund, 6245 Randall Rd., Syracuse, NY 13214.
