Edward J. Czaja

Edward J. Czaja, 86, passed away peacefully on January 1st, 2010.
A life-long resident of the Syracuse area, Edward was a decorated World War II veteran. He served as a combat infantryman in Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe with Company F of the 117th Infantry's 30th Division. He received the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, the American Theatre Ribbon and four bronze stars among other recognitions and was one of the few remaining World War II veterans to have served in the Battle of the Bulge.
Edward retired as a machinist from Rollway Bearing after 45 years of service in 1986. He was instrumental in establishing the UAW Local #798 and was the last charter member at the time of his retirement. He was an active sportsman who participated in several golf and bowling leagues throughout the years including the Syracuse City Bowling Championship. He was a member of the local VFW #3146 and a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Edward was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Storto), his brother Charles and his sister, Helen (Bernard) Farley.
Surviving are his three daughters, Mary (Keith) Comins of Cleveland, NY, Diane Czaja and Theresa Granthum of Liverpool; his son, Steven Czaja of Liverpool; three sisters, Sophie (John) Kostyszyn, Frances Czaja and Veronica (Stanley) Tulowieck;. He also leaves behind three grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services will be on Thursday 9:30AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will Wednesday 4-7PM at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., North Syracuse.
