Edward B. Collum of Naples, Florida, and Fayetteville, New York, died in Syracuse, New York, on August 1, 2013.
Ed was born in Syracuse on November 20, 1927, of Thad L. Collum, a contractor, and Ann Boshart Collum.
He grew up in Syracuse, attended Central High School, and graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. After his freshman year at Cornell University he did a two-year tour in the US Navy before returning to school. In the Navy he represented the Pacific Fleet on its basketball team. While at Cornell he met and married his wife of fifty years, the former Cynthia Harvey of New York City. She passed away in 1999.
After graduating from Cornell in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering he went to work for the Henderson-Johnson Company of Syracuse, a construction company specializing in acoustical ceilings, drywall, computer floors, and lightweight roof decking. Ed became president and CEO of the company, working there until his retirement.
During his business career he served as president of the Syracuse Builders Exchange, president of the Building Industry Employers of New York State, and president of the Cornell Club of Syracuse. He was a founding member and the first president of the Syracuse Junior Builders Exchange. He was a director on the Metropolitan Water Board, the board of the YMCA of Syracuse, and the Lincoln Bank. He also served as trustee of Community General Hospital.
Away from work Ed followed his two great passions - golf and fishing. He was a member of both the Onondaga Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville, and the Royal Poinciana Club in Naples where he was two-time club champion. For close to 50 years, he spent much of every summer on Loughborough Lake in southern Ontario pursuing smallmouth and largemouth bass. After retirement Ed became a resident of Naples, Florida, and spent his summers in Syracuse and Canada. In Naples he met Mary Louise (Pooh) Wastrom who he married in 2001. They traveled extensively and greatly enjoyed each other's company until his death.
He is survived by his wife Pooh Collum, her five children, 12 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; his brother Thad Collum, wife Barbara Collum, and four nieces and nephews; his son David Collum, wife Candace Cornell and their children William and Thomas of Ithaca, New York; and his son Ned Collum and wife Cindy Chardonnay of Carbondale, Colorado.
Private memorial services will be held in the future.
