Edmund M. Martin, 75, of North Syracuse, died Tuesday at Crouse Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1930, he was one of 8 children. Edmund was the son of Irish Immigrants, Francis Martin and Helen McGovern and graduated from Manual Training High School in 1948 with Highest Honors. Edmund was encouraged by Monsignor Keen to develop his boxing ability, which later led to his success in the 1948 Golden Gloves Championship in New York City. He was awarded a full, 4 year scholarship to Syracuse University for Boxing, where he was a 4 year Varsity Letter Winner and member of the Varsity Club. He boxed frequently in Saratoga, NY. He graduated from SU with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and served as a Reservist in the Army before he was hired by Dresser Industries (later Halliburton) where he worked as a Regional Manager for 30 years in their tool division. Edmund was a devoted member of St. Rose of Lima Church in North Syracuse where he enrolled his 6 children in elementary school.
Edmund is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years Barbara, three daughters; Linda Martin of Syracuse, Mary Martin-Koski of West Palm Beach and Kelly Travis of Oriskany Falls, three sons; Kevin Martin of Florida, John Martin of North Carolina and Michael Martin of North Syracuse, seven grandchildren; Dori Martin, Colleen and Chris Koski, C.J. and Casey Martin, Cassidy and J.D. Travis, four brothers; Joe Martin of North Carolina, Jerry Martin of California, John Martin of Long Island and Kevin of Brooklyn and one sister; Theresa Martin of Pennsylvania.
Services will be held on Saturday at 10 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church, North Syracuse. Burial will follow in North Syracuse Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday from 4-8 PM at New Comer Family Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse. Contributions in Edmund's memory may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in North Syracuse.
