Edith A. Blenis

April 3, 1943 — August 10, 2020

Edith "Edie" Blenis lost her battle with angio sarcoma, a rare blood vessel cancer on August 10, 2020. She had been a five-year survivor of breast cancer. As she left this world, she was surrounded by the love of her family.

Edith was the daughter of the late Lena Cleveland Burke and Floyd "Tuffy" Burke. She was born in Cortland, NY on April 3, 1943. She attended Fisher Ave School grades 3-10 and then transferred to Union Springs Academy, where she graduated in 1961.

In the fall of '61, she attended a nursing program at New England Sanitarium and Hospital in Stoneham, Mass. She later worked on staff there and did private duty. Edith moved on to work at a Skilled Nursing Facility from 1963 -1965, and continued with private duty until 1967.

Edie met and married the late Jack H. Blenis. They were married for 32 years. After their marriage, they moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire's Pease Air Force Base, where Jack was stationed until his retirement in 1971, after twenty years of service to his country.

In 1971, they moved to Syracuse, NY, where Edie continued to work in nursing at a local nursing home. In 1991, she became a staff nurse for Convenient Family Healthcare, a treatment and diagnostic center with several clinics in the suburbs. She later became their Nurse Administrator.

She was affiliated with several organizations such as The National Association of Allied Health Professionals, National Association of Physician Nurses, and National Phlebotomy Association.

She was an active member of Palliative Care, "the center for death and dying." She completed their training course and counseled patients and families facing a terminal illness in the 80's. This association is now called "Hospice".

In her life, after nursing, she enjoyed volunteering through her church. She enjoyed assisting and occasionally teaching "The Life Skills" class at Brown Memorial NMC. She was on the New World Ministry committee through Andrew's and Pastored by Aaron Limo. She was a member of The Southern Sudan Healthcare Project, associated with the "Lost Boy" of Syracuse, and headed by Andrew Memorial UMC.

Edith is survived by her beloved children, Bonnie Blenis of Syracuse and her daughter, Amanda Blenis; a son, Christian Blenis of N. Syracuse and his daughter Marisa Smith.

Edith felt cancer was a surprise opportunity, one that helped her appreciate what is truly important in life, including a loving, caring family, a deeper regard for self-discovery, a purpose, a deeper commitment to her faith, and awe of just living.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 10am – 11am at the funeral home. A service will follow at 11:00am.

Burial will be private in the Veteran's Cemetery.
