Dennis Hugh Shay
October 13, 2007
Dennis Hugh Shay, 64, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully after a day surrounded by family, friends, others whose lives he touched, and the caring staff of Hospice and of Francis House. Featured in the Syracuse Newspapers in the mid-1980s as an original local "Mr. Mom," he lived a remarkable life of caring and nurturing others in a great many ways.
Born on March 13, 1943, he graduated from Central Tech High School in 1961 and ESF in 1979. He served as a medic for the Army for three years in Vietnam and Panama. After several years of volunteering in the schools, he worked as a teaching assistant for the Syracuse City School District for 18 years. He also served for many years in further care of children, first through Skytop Day Care, and later through Catholic Charities. For over a decade, he was also an avid supporter and volunteer for the Appleseed Productions community theatre and the Corcoran Association of Student Theatre.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 37 years, Martha; his son, Michael; his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Gregory Hipius; his sister and brother-in-law Cathleen and Art Brigham, several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a great many treasured students, co-workers, and friends.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 116 West Glen Avenue, Syracuse. A short service at 7 PM will be followed by an open reception from 8 PM to 11 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Francis House, 108 Michaels Avenue, Syracuse, NY, 13208.
