David M. Burnett

January 23, 1944 — February 28, 2025

David M. Burnett, 81 of Syracuse NY, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Iroquois Nursing Home surrounded by loving family. He had endured a long battle with cancer.

Born on January 23, 1944, he was the son of the late Elmer V and Nancy McLean Burnett who raised him and his seven siblings in Syracuse and East Syracuse, New York. In 1963, David enlisted in the United States Navy; following his military service David had a multi-year career in law enforcement, starting with the New York State Department of Corrections and ending with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department. In the late 1970’s, David followed in his father’s footsteps and began a career in the railroad, retiring after nearly 20 years as a dispatcher for Conrail (CSX). 

Over the years, David enjoyed the companionship of family and many friends and was active with them as he pursued many interests and hobbies. He loved hunting, gun collecting, gun trading and playing bid whist, especially after gathering for a good meal with those he loved.

He is survived by his son, David M. Burnett II (Karen); daughter, Adrienne Burnett Rogers and stepson, Richard Szymanski; his siblings, Lucia B. Williams, Michael M. Burnett, Julia M. Burnett, Nancy Maria Burnett, Vernon M. Burnett (Jane), John F. Burnett, Christa Angela Burnett. He is also mourned by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In keeping with the wishes of David there will be no calling hours or services.
