Charles Wollowitz

August 3, 1927 — March 19, 2017

Charles Wollowitz, 89, of Syracuse NY, passed away at home with family at his side. Born in the City of New York he spent his youth in Brooklyn where he studied art at Lincoln High School, graduating in 1944. He served in the Merchant Marine which was part of the Coast Guard both during and after WWII. Following his return he attended Brooklyn College where he continued his art studies but then became a cabinet maker and designer while living in New York City. Charlie left New York City for Rhode Island where he lived briefly and then moved to Syracuse in 1955. Once again he was able to pursue art work, first in a realistic style and then he moved into more social commentary to reflect the political problems of the era. In 1968 after completing a BFA and MFA at Syracuse University he taught 3 dimensional art for the Syracuse City Schools as well as Printmaking at LeMoyne College.

Charlie was brilliant as an artist and also in his knowledge of both classical music and literature. He chose to work in many different media; painting, printmaking, sculpture in bronze, clay and wood incorporating unusual materials in his works. He explored clay as well as fused glass but for the last 20 years he preferred the freedom of expression and the many challenges creating sculptures primarily of wood. He was a true Renaissance artist of the 20th and 21st centuries. Charlie continued to teach at LeMoyne College until he was 84 years old. His students both in Nottingham High School and at LeMoyne College flourished in his classes with several continuing in art professionally due to his inspiring passion for both art and teaching. He supported his many students both intellectually and emotionally while teaching them to be at ease working with tools they had never used prior to his class.

Charlie's greatest love however was his wife, children and many grandchildren. They all loved him deeply and he was truly the anchor of a large, warm and accomplished family due to his undying devotion and inspiration for each one.

He is survived by his spouse Linda, sons Michael (Melissa Sarris) and Andrew (Megan Williams), daughters Susan (Nathan Haese) Heather, and Lorna (Gregg Drew). Also his grandchildren Eva, Sam, Cody, Jaina, Bram, Griffin, Hunter, Trey, Dylan, Ty and Haley. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 6 at 2PM at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 East Genesee Street, Syracuse.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be offered to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St, Liverpool, NY 13088.
