January 26, 1929 — December 14, 2020

Charlene "Gayle" Owen Harmes, Syracuse, formerly of Loveland, CO and Rochester, NY passed into the loving arms of her heavenly father on December 14, 2020.

Gayle was born in 1929 in Findley Lake, NY and lived 91 wonderful years. Gayle was a loving wife, mother, coach, Girl Scout Leader, chauffer, grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of providing anyone who needed it, a good meal and an ear to listen. She married the love of her life in 1951, Alfred R. Harmes. She then settled into raising two daughters and going on adventures with her family. Cooking for Gayle was not a chore. She loved preparing meals not just for family, but for friends, large church functions, and those who needed it. Her culinary skills were learned while getting her associates degree in food service from Rochester Institute of Technology. Gayle was also an avid quilter and knitter. She loved making baby blankets for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her knitted afghans are still being enjoyed by the family.

Gayle was predeceased by her husband, Alfred R. Harmes; her parents, Marjorie (Owen) and Harold Wilson, and Leland and Leda (Cummings) Owen; her brother, Leland Owen, Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Bamberg, and Marjorie (Robert) Ostrander; sisters, Joyce Swanson, and Jacqueline Greer; sisters-in-law Jennie Ippolito, Carole Webster, Charlene Harmes, and Barbara Owen; grandchildren, Eric Bamberg, Alison Bamberg, Lara Bamberg, Karin Bamberg, Melissa Kmiecik, Naomi (Dan) Trivison, Ruth (Jesse) Northrop, Alanna Abreu, and Jordan (Brandon) Workman. Her life was blessed with 22 great grandchildren who will miss her very much.

The family would like to thank that staff from Brookdale Clarebridge, Peregine Senior Living and Elderwood of Liverpool for their loving and tender care of Charlene.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital, Humane Society of CNY, and the Alzheimer's Association.
