Carole Louise Charlton born on February 28,1940 was the oldest of eleven children and grew up where the mouth of the Oswegatchie River meets the picturesque St. Lawrence River. This beautiful landscape and its people would forever be her ‘heart home’. Ogdensburg was her birth home, but like the rivers she loved, she flowed to and navigated through many homes, finally settling in Caughdenoy, NY abreast of the fast flowing Oneida River. Here she would raise and support her family: her husband Richard Mooney and three very loved children, Alicia, Randall and Brian.
She became an important part of the Brewerton community, enjoying close-knit friends who camped together, played bridge together, and created many an afghan together as well as participating in a vibrant church community.
Carole was a dedicated Registered Nurse who held her BA from the SU school of Education in Public Health, receiving her RN degree from the St. Lawrence University School Psychiatric Nursing. In her early years Carole was a public health school nurse teacher and the head nurse at Loretto on the 13th floor. She went on to become head nurse at Hutchings Psychiatric Center and would go on to create a statewide outpatient program for patients with mental illness and chemical dependency. She loved her patients and her love showed in her dedication to their safety and recovery. Carole would become a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church, and her sermons were always well received. Her easy smile and compassionate nature would create community among all of her beloved friends, co-workers and patients. Her avid curiosity would foster many hobbies including crochet and a love of elephants. Her other passions included history, anthropology, scrabble, British mysteries, propagating violets, arts and crafts, and many cups of coffee shared with beloved friends on her porch by the river.
Carole was predeceased by her husband, Richard Mooney; sons, Randall Kevin, and Brian Richard; as well as siblings David, Nelson, Warren, Deane, Roger, Daniel, and Grant Charlton. Carole is survived by her daughter, Alicia Mooney (Anthony Anello); and her siblings Paul Charlton, Jeffrey Charlton (Connie), and Rosalie Salazar, as well as Carole’s grandchildren Ashley Cleveland, Aiden Mooney, Connor Mooney, Adelaide Anello, and her great granddaughter, Neveah.
Carole will be missed by all who loved her
