Carol Ann Lacava Hockenberry

February 15, 1940 — April 10, 2025

Carol Ann Lacava Hockenberry, age 85, of Liverpool, NY, passed away peacefully late in the evening of Thursday, April 10, 2025. Carol was born to Pasquale “Michael” Lacava and Evangeline Margaret “Eva” Reed Lacava in Patton, PA in 1940. She was raised there and graduated from Patton High School before moving to Pittsburgh to attend Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating, Carol worked at Eye & Ear Hospital and with Bernard Silverblatt MD, both in Pittsburgh.

Carol met Glenn Hockenberry when they were introduced by his cousin -  Carol’s coworker Nancy. The couple were wed in a small ceremony at the First United Methodist Church in Greensburg, PA in 1965. Over the following years, they welcomed their daughters Amy Lynn and Ann Kristine. While living in Greensburg, Carol volunteered as a dispatcher for Mutual Aid Ambulance Service and served as a room parent, PTA member, and helper for her daughters’ classes and Girl Scout troop.

After moving to Liverpool NY during the Blizzard of ’77, Carol worked in allergy/ENT with Harold Small, MD and then with James Patrei, MD until her retirement. She also worked at Bayberry Uniform. Carol was happiest spending her summers at camp in Alexandria Bay, consuming copious amounts of British dramas and mystery novels, and gardening with Glenn. She passed her passion for the first two on to her children, her green thumb not so much. Carol also enjoyed traveling the country, visiting loved ones and seeking out the homes and resting places of her ancestors. She was a prolific family genealogist for over 40 years, and ensured her children and grandchildren would know and appreciate their roots.

Never one to mince words, she voiced her opinions freely. She was a lifelong learner and always supported her kids’ and grandkids’ activities and milestones.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Mike & Eva Lacava. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Glenn, as well as their two daughters, Amy (John) Hockenberry Pfeifer of Liverpool, NY and Ann (Andrew) Hockenberry Hause of Lawrence, KS; and her four grandchildren: Hannah Spring Pfeifer (Anthony Ciccotosto) of West Chester, PA, Madeline Grace “Maisie” Pfeifer of Liverpool, NY, Nora Catherine Hause of Lawrence, KS and Nicholas Truman Hause of Lawrence, KS. Carol is also survived by her sister, Anita Lacava Thorne of Scottsdale, AZ; her niece, Adrienne Thorne Cronin of Zelienople, PA; her cousin, Jenifer Morton Eubanks of Coshocton, OH; and many other cousins and dear friends. We will all miss her greatly.

Her family wishes to thank the staff at Crouse Hospital 4 Memorial and Neuroscience ICU for the care and dedication shown to Carol. Carol was a lifelong volunteer and will continue to help others through an anatomical gift.
