Burton L. Smith, Sr.

Burton L. Smith, Sr. recently of Weedsport, NY passed away on June 20, 2009. He was born in LaFayette, NY on August 22, 1925. He served in WWII, in the USNR as a nose-gunner in a Navy B-24 Liberator, flying 60 missions in the South Pacific. He was an AMM3C when Honorably Discharged. He worked with LaFayette Community Council touching the lives of hundreds of young people, as a Biddy Basketball coach, Little league Baseball organizer and coach for 18 years, Cub Scout Master for 10 years, and he worked in Boy Scout Leadership positions for 8 years. He retired in 1991 as Dispatcher, for the Chili Volunteer Fire Department. He then moved to Lady Lake, FL where he was involved in community affairs, and a member of the Chapel of All Faiths church. He and his wife Louise volunteered at Habitat for Humanity for five years and as Hospice Caregivers for 9 years, having received the Volunteer of the year Award 3 consecutive years from Hospice, in Florida. He was a Life Member of both the VFW and American Legion. Predeceased by: Leon L. and Laura H. Smith.
SURVIVORS: He is survived by his adoring wife of 64 years, Louise (Lauzon) Smith,; two loving daughters Sharon Long (husband David)and Trudie Barker (partner Mark), and five loving sons, Burton, Jr.(wife Jean), Richard (wife Sherri), David (wife Beth), Marc (wife Sandy), and Jerry (wife Debbie); 20 Grandchildren; Matthew, Melissa, Richard, Jr., Kimberly, Stacey, Cantrelle, , Jeshua, Matthew, Holland, Julia, Kelly, Marc, Jr., Jackie, Teila, Christopher, Kevin, Laura, Ashlee, Steve and William; 29 Great Grandchildren. Three sisters, Gertrude Miles, Dorothy Dando (husband Rod), and Beverly (Newcombe) Druce (husband George)
Services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home located at (705 N. Main St., North Syracuse, NY 13212; 315-214-0400 Calling hours: Tuesday, June 23rd at (5:00 to 8:00 PM) Funeral Services: Wednesday June 24th at (10:00 AM) Burial to follow at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, HOwlett Hill Rd.
