Betty W. Spoar of Clay, NY, passed away at the age of 89 at the Cottages in Cicero on Saturday, September 19, 2020. She was born on November 7, 1930 in North Plainfield, New Jersey to Percy and Bettina (Zahm) Waldron. Betty grew up in Syracuse and graduated from Nottingham High School in 1948. After graduation, she worked at the telephone company in the engineering department. On September 15, 1951, she married George K. Spoar; they remained together for nearly 65 years.
Her husband's career took her away from Syracuse to Tariffville, CT and to Hudson, MA where she raised their two children, Sandra (Sandy) and G. Andrew (Drew). She settled into these new moves by doing what she did best, by making many new friends, and by participating in neighborhood and local community activities. From dressing as the Easter Bunny for an annual neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt, leading a Girl Scout troop, to becoming a consistent volunteer at the election polls, Betty was always engaged. With her husband's retirement in 1989, they returned to their families and friends in Syracuse and started a new phase of their lives. In the retirement, Betty enjoyed their new neighbors and seeing old friends, their summers at Brennan Beach, attending Syracuse University football tailgating parties along with other SU games and hanging out with the old Westcott Street Gang.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, George, her mother, Bettina and her brother, George H. Zahm. She is survived by her two children, Sandra (Rob) and Drew (Mary), three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and her supportive and caring neighbors and friends.
We wish to thank the staff at the Cottages in Cicero for the wonderful care they provided to Betty during her time with them.
Calling hours will be held Friday, September 25th at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 705 N. Main Street, North Syracuse from 10am – 11am with funeral services to follow.
In lieu of flowers it is requested that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
