Angela Canestaro Phelps, 83, formerly of DeWitt, passed away this week. Her Air Force pilot husband, Major Donald W. predeceased her in 1980 as did her beloved, artistic son, Derek Stephen at a young age. As an Air Force wife,
she traveled far and wide with her husband. She was actively involved in the military life, as she wrote and illustrated for various air base newspapers and also taught orientation courses for the officer's wives. Angela had a deep thirst for the written word and loved reading, writing, studying, and journaling. She enjoyed art, painting, and gardening. She attended classes at various colleges in Texas and New York. In Syracuse, she was involved with providing instruction in Community Education Programs. She was retired from the Syracuse City School District.
Angela is predeceased by her mother, Belinda Cosko Canestaro, her Navy veteran father, Stephen Canestaro, her brothers Thomas Vendetti, Carmen Canestaro of Brooktondale, her sisters Beverly Motter of Marietta, Georgia, Marie Potash of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and sister- of -the- heart and life long friend, Ann Bertini of Cortland.
Her survivors are: her sister in law, Virginia Canestaro of Brooktondale, and her children: the eldest Leslie (Cy) Pottebaum of Arvada, Colorado, Scott Phelps of Colorado, Treacy (Marty) Martans of Fayetteville, Joan Squires of Liverpool, and her youngest Patricia Phelps (Robert) Barboni of Eastwood. Angela had 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Angela's services are being held at the Newcomer Funeral Home in N. Syracuse and her burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetary in Syracuse, both are private.
