Alfred G. Knieser

Alfred G. Knieser, 93 of Cicero, sailed across the finish line of life into the arms of God and his sweetheart, Bup. With son, Stephan, daughter, Heidi and daughter-in-law, Regina surrounding him with love Alfred died peacefully at his home.

He was a first generation German American, growing up on Syracuse's North Side, attending Gethsemane Methodist Church, working as a "Newsie", Dairy Boy and Pinsetter. He began a lifelong ethic of "work hard, play harder".

As a 75+ year member of Syracuse Turners, he learned, taught and promoted physical education. Returning from service as a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII and receiving the Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge, Al obtained a degree of Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

After graduation, Al worked in the Chicago area and returned to Syracuse where he was employed with the North Syracuse School District for over 35 years as a teacher, coach of wrestling, gymnastics, track and golf as Athletic Director. Al was an avid golfer, bowler, traveler, life explorer and VFW member.

He is survived by a grandson, Eichel and several nieces and nephews. Al was predeceased by his father George, mother Olga, brother, Herbert and Al's wife of 42 years, Barbara Luttinger Knieser.

Calling hours will take place at New Comer Cremations & Funerals on Tuesday, July 17th from 4-8pm. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, July 18th at 10am. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of CNY and The Humane Society.
