The world has lost a truly good guy. John W. "Jack" Spring, 82, of Liverpool passed away January 5, 2023 after bravely battling a long illness. He spent his last days at home with his three loving children. He was a lifelong Central New Yorker, born in Baldwinsville to the late William and Madeline Spring. He was a graduate of Baldwinsville Academy and LeMoyne College where he studied history and played varsity soccer. In the mid-nineties, he retired after a long career in sales and management. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Baldwinsville (altar server) and then Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Liverpool. In his retirement, he volunteered for many years for North Area Meals on Wheels, along with his wife. Jack's lifelong interests included boating, fishing, camping, birdwatching, gardening, golf, conservation, making lists and national and local history, specifically that of the Erie Canal and Native American culture. Always an Olympics and New York Yankees fan, he shared these passions with many of his family members.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen (Stevens) in 2011. Surviving are his son, John Jr. of Liverpool, daughter, Christine Spring (Thomas Minardi) of Baldwinsville, and grandchildren, Jacob and Tessa Minardi; son, William (Jennifer Castle) of New Paltz, and grandchildren Casper and Clea Spring, and sister, Kathleen Baker of Liverpool and dear nephew and nieces Bill, Mary and Kristine. He is also survived by step-grandchildren, Jessica Minardi-Saraceni (Tony), Sara Minardi (Tony Merola), Christopher Minardi and great-grandchildren Lila, June, Chloe and Indy in addition to many dear in-laws, nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was blessed to have been able to spend time with his family on special trips, including a treasured adventure to Lake Placid for the Olympics in 1980, and always had the menu planned for a great cookout. Most importantly, he always put his family first and lived his life with integrity and a generous spirit.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses at St. Joseph's Home Health Care and the doctors and nurses at Upstate Cancer Center for their compassionate care.
A graveside memorial service and a celebration of life will be held in the late spring or summer. Contributions in his memory can be made to North Area Meals on Wheels, 413 Church Street, North Syracuse, NY 13212 or at namow.org.
