Sherwood Smith

May 10, 1927 — November 5, 2022

Sherwood Smith passed away peacefully at the Syracuse VA Hospital on November 5th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

The son of George and Lillian Smith, Sherwood was born in 1927 in New Haven, CT. The family moved downstate to Poughkeepsie, NY where he attended school. During his school years he enjoyed music, playing the accordion and later in life playing the organ. Upon graduation from high school, he served in WWII as a Navy Sailor on the USS Kitkun Bay. His ship was stationed in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Armistice marking the end of WWII.

He then moved to Syracuse, spending many years here and marrying his beloved wife, Margaret Vossler Smith. They were married for 46 wonderful years with Sherwood being her caregiver at the end of her life.

During his life and after he retired, Sherwood was a consistent blood donor for the American Red Cross for 25 years. He made many friends during the years. He volunteered for the North Area Meals on Wheels and was also a member of the Syracuse Toast Masters Club. Sherwood worked at Crouse Hinds in the foundry during his first years in Syracuse. He later worked for Exxon Mobil as a tractor trailer driver for over 25 years until he retired. He always provided for his family working additional jobs at UPS and owning his own paper route.

Sherwood loved music and especially enjoyed dancing on Sundays at Castaways where he met his beloved wife, Maria and being around their friends. They enjoyed traveling and a memorable trip on their Alaskan Cruise. They enjoyed cheering on their Syracuse Teams and the NY Yankees. Maria became his caregiver in his later years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Vossler Smith and a son, Gary R. Smith, a Vietnam Veteran buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 10 years, Maria Capozza Smith; two daughters, Lee Smith of Virginia and Laurel Smith of Syracuse; two grandchildren; three step-children, Kathleen (Robert Colling) LaRocca, Lorraine (Maurice) Palucci and Edward Capozza and three step-grandchildren.

Sherwood led a life of love and devotion to his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness and constant willingness to help someone whenever the need would arise.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 10th 10am-12pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals in North Syracuse, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Pope John 23rd Roman Catholic Church, Soule Road in Liverpool at 12:30pm.
